This Week

Good Morning Parents,

As I mentioned during back to school night, I won't be sending graded homework back home weekly. I only sent the first one graded so you can see my expectations. You can see what the number means in the rubric posted in the Homework tab. I am mostly looking at completed work, even if it is not correct. I don't deduct points for incorrect responses, just for being incomplete or missing (unless I get a note saying the student was unable to understand what he/she had to do).

This week we are working on:

Spanish Language Arts: What makes a pet special?
Math: Skip Counting, tally marks, number stories
Citizenship

Important Information

Good Afternoon Parents,

I know this post is fairly long, but it contains tons of important information. Please take a couple of minutes to read it thoroughly.

HOMEWORK: Today I assigned the first HOMEWORK packet. As I had mentioned before, this homework packet is a practice. Every student received a printed copy today. Starting next week I will not send printed copies of the homework. Instead I will post the homework in our classroom blog for you to print. The homework is assigned on Wednesdays and is due the following Wednesday. IF YOU CANNOT PRINT THE HOMEWORK PLEASE E-MAIL ME AND I WILL CONTINUE SENDING YOU A WEEKLY PRINTED COPY.  Only the first homework will be sent back home with corrections or comments for your reference. From there on I will not be sending homework back home. I will e-mail you if I have any concerns or doubts about your child’s homework. Students will take a math home links book. In the homework’s directions page you will notice I assigned pages. These pages are from such math book. Complete the assigned pages, tear them out and staple them with the rest of the packet. This book is in English to assist parents in helping their children understand how to better acclimate to first grade math. The vocabulary can be difficult and directions are often fairly long and require reading. Later on the school year I will be sending the Spanish version, but you can keep the English version as a reference.

Spelling Tests: Students will have a spelling test every Wednesday. The words they will be tested on will be sent home every Wednesday in the homework. They will have a week to practice; we will see them every day in class as well.  We will have a PRACTICE TEST next Wednesday with the set of words that were sent in today’s homework.

Please remind your child that they must be taking their book bag and orange folder with their daily behavior chart home every day. Both of this should be brought back to school every morning. Students are paid class money for bringing their book daily.

SNACK/ LUNCH: It would be super helpful if snacks and lunch are packed separately. You can use a small baggie for snacks or if it is something that is already packed just write your child’s name with a sharpie. The reasoning behind this is that when we go to snack we only take the snack red basket with us, if students leave their snacks in their lunch bags they constantly forget to take them out. Meaning that they are constantly wasting recess time walking back to the classroom and searching for their lunch bags in the blue bin. If you are already doing this, thank you so much!

Ice cream: The cafeteria will start selling ice cream Friday September 15. We highly encourage students to bring only exact change to buy ice cream.. Each student should only buy one ice cream.

Math Racers: The first math racer worksheet went home today. We will be doing these pages every Tuesday and Thursday to practice math facts & fluency (I time them for 5 minutes). I will send the corrected sheets Wednesdays and Fridays. If your child scores a 98% or higher they will pass on to the next racer sheet. If they miss more than 2 they will stay in the same racer until they pass it.
CLASS CENTS: In class students earn class money (fake cents) for following our school and classroom rules. They can use this money to buy from our classroom store.

Classroom store: I will be selling from our classroom store every other Friday. Students can use their class money to buy at such time; I will usually have them take what they bought home. It can stay in the classroom if it is something that can be used in here (ie. a pencil).

Birthdays: District policy prohibits distribution of food outside of lunch and two classroom parties per year due to allergy and health concerns. Any food sent for a child's birthday will have to go back home. Instead, goodie-bags with things like erasers, pencils, stickers, etc can be distributed for birthdays. Another idea is to give the classroom a gift, such as a book that can be read to the class at the end of the day. Thank you for your understanding as this will help ensure the safety of our students!

Morning drop-off: Students can play in the lower playground when there is a teacher present to supervise. Parents and siblings cannot be on the playground due to safety concerns and district policies. Please be aware that if you drop off your child after the bell has rang they will be marked tardy. If you drop off your child in the morning and our door is already closed, please make sure to get a tardy slip from the office. I usually take roll first thing when we come into the classroom.

Afternoon pick-up: Students that are not picked up in the classroom by 3:15 will be walked to the pick-up circle, pick up your child there.

Volunteers: For those willing to volunteer click on the Google document below. If you are interested in any positions described in the document please e-mail me with your request.

Back to School Night: Sept 13   6-7pm
I look forward to seeing you all there! Please remember that back to school night is only for parents, students should not attend.

Thank you for your attention please let me know if you have any questions J

First Week of School!

Hello Parents,

The first week of school has gone by so fast! I am so lucky to have this class and I am sure we will accomplish great things.

A couple of things:

Orange folders should go home daily with Behavior Chart and should be sent back to class daily.

Book Bags: All students should have taken a book back home starting Thursday (there were a a couple that forgot them). I will have them change their books every 2-3 days. I will be calling students to read with me at different times throughout the week. I will talk about this and moving up reading levels in more depth during back to school night.

Next Wednesday I will send out information about volunteering positions.

Our theme next week is "What do you do at your school?" and Counting using different kinds of tools (ie. number line, hundredths charts).

This month we will be focusing on Citizenship. The three main rules in our school are: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.

Reminder: There will be NO SCHOOL MONDAY September 4th in observance of Labor Day.

Have a great weekend!
